Mondays are the worst, am I right?
Well, especially when you are a runner, are supposed to start training for a spring marathon, and you wake up in the morning with the stiffest ankle area possible, making even the simple act of walking down stairs a painful act. Sigh. I really don’t want to be injured again, especially when I’ve been so careful about avoiding doing too much too soon. Tomorrow I go to the podiatrist and my new primary care doctor, so hopefully I can get a diagnosis and a rehab plan that will allow me to resume running soon. Very soon.
So, with that, I want to focus on the positive, which isn’t hard to do when you look around. Here are some things that are making me happy today, even on a Monday.
Try not to be jealous. I know–isn’t this a great look? It looks like 80s threw up all over me. Rest easy–this photo was, in fact, taken in the 80s, and I don’t look like this anymore. But I like how everything I’m wearing is white in this photo, right down to the earrings. Sweet. Those scrunchy socks remind me of this guy:
Also making me happy: my Indiespensable package arrived!
Indiespensable is an incredible book club run by Powell’s Books, a huge bookstore in Portland, Oregon, and also one of my favorite places in the entire world. I joined the club in December 2012 as a Christmas gift to myself, as I love to read and figured being sent books to read, without any input on my part, would push me out of my comfort zone.
Every 4 to 6 weeks, I receive a shipment in the mail. Each shipment is $39.95. Upon receipt, squealing ensues.
And this is what it looks like when I open the box. It’s like Christmas morning every 4 to 6 weeks!
Each shipment comes with a first edition, signed book with a limited edition slip cover, an explanatory booklet, and one or two (usually) thematic treats. Shabang!
Volume 45 features Orfeo by Richard Powers. I have heard good things about this novel–about a hobbyist genetic engineer on the run–but it’s so new that even book behemoth Amazon has only 8 reader reviews posted so far. With Indiespensable, the book selection is usually brand new, and sometimes hasn’t even been released yet to the general public.
The “thematic” treats this time are a bag of artisanal raspberry truffle popcorn from Portland’s Poplandia, and a Hot Chocolate on a Stick variety bag from New York’s Popbar. As Indiespensable’s team sees it, these treats are–like the accompanying novel–“[t]hrilling and deeply satisfying indeed.”
Past volumes of Indiespensable include The Best of McSweeney’s (Indiespensable Vol. 44) and The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt (Vol. 43). Loved, loved, loved The Goldfinch. I have enjoyed almost every book sent to me so far.

Finally, this story I read on Gawker:
I promise I’m not trying to be a Debbie Downer.
This man’s love for his daughter, and his dedication to his promise, is life affirming. This made me happy in a “I have tears leaking out of my eyes” way. Considering the challenges this man and his family face, my little running injury is nothing to mope about.
