What am I excited about right now? And what should you consider getting excited about, too (nudge, nudge)?
1. My entry in KUOW’s Local Wonder contest
I have a nerdy fascination with linguistics and accents. I recently submitted a question to the Local Wonder question contest held by my local NPR affiliate, KUOW, and my question is one of three finalists.
If my question receives the most votes, KUOW will answer the question I’m dying to know (as edited by KUOW): “Do Pacific Northwesterners have an accent and what does it sound like?”
Please vote for my question at http://kuow.org/topic/whats-your-local-wonder-question. Voting remains open through this Friday, 11/21/14. Thank you!
2. Yes Please by Amy Poehler
I don’t usually favor audiobooks, preferring the written word, but I downloaded this on iTunes for listening to on my runs (my last audiobook purchase to listen to on runs? Let’s Pretend this Never Happened by Jenny Lawson). So far Yes Please isn’t as funny as Let’s Pretend or Tina Fey’s BossyPants, but I’m only in the foreword right now. Amy Poehler rocks, so I’m sure this book is going to be hilarious and smart.
After running the Mustache Dache, I started looking forward to the Tacoma City Turkey Trot. I recently read this helpful Runners World article about how to run a faster 5K. I don’t have enough time to implement these workouts to set me up for this race, but I’m considering doing some of them to improve my times for future 5Ks.
I never thought I’d say it, but I’m actually starting to enjoy 5Ks. Lauren Fleshman’s article, “10 Reasons the 5K is Freaking Awesome,” is starting to make sense to me now.
4. The perfect holiday gift for moms
My mom has been coveting the Stella & Dot Enlighten Bracelet that my friend Aimee gave me for my birthday. The band is leather and has “mother” in multiple languages stamped on the inside of it. Along with being really good looking, 100% of the net proceeds from the bracelet are contributed to Every Mother Counts, a vital non-profit committed to improving maternal health worldwide.
I purchased the bracelet for my mom for her upcoming birthday, and I hope she loves it as much as I love mine.
5. The DC Trifecta’s Instagram Gratitude Challenge
The DC Trifecta (a.k.a. Courtney, Mar, and Cynthia) have organized an Instagram challenge where participants follow them, post a daily photo of something for which they’re grateful, and tag the trifecta members (@eatprayrundc, @marmaone1, & @yousignedupforwhat) and use #gratitude and #DCTrifecta with the postings. The project started November 17 and runs through November 26. For every entry, the participant is entered into a contest to win prizes, which is very cool.
I’m primarily interested, though, in being more intentional about my Instagram photos, focusing on what I should be thankful for, and seeing what the other participants have posted. Even if you didn’t start at the outset of the project/contest, you should strongly consider joining now. (And while you’re on Instagram to join the challenge, consider following me!)
I loved Cheryl Strayed’s book. The movie, starring Reese Witherspoon as Strayed, will be released on December 5. I cannot wait to see it! I have watched the trailer 10 times already, I swear. This is one of the rare movies-adapted-from-books that I am thrilled to watch. If you haven’t read Wild, please do so ex post haste!
What are you excited about these days? What book are you reading/listening to currently? Looking forward to seeing any movies?
