Weekend Update

It’s Monday morning and it doesn’t feel like a Monday for the second week in a row. Hooray! I’m off work today and blogging from Ketchum, Idaho, home of the legendary Sun Valley Resort, where I’ve been staying this weekend.

Even though I’m taking a little R&R, I didn’t want to miss out on Tara’s Weekend Update. Please be sure to check out her blog, Running ‘n’ Reading and consider linking up, too!

Before I skipped out of town for my mini-vacay, on Friday night my husband and I drove up to Seattle for a concert at the Moore Theater. This was the second time in a few months that I saw Brandi Carlile in concert, and she was fantastic (again!).

Saturday morning I woke up bright and early to await my ride to the airport: My best friend T, who flew up from her home in San Francisco to travel with me to Idaho for our girls weekend!

Ketchum, while a very small town, is unlike most small towns in that it’s a ski town. Everyone’s extremely active, whether it’s skiing (alpine or cross country), snowboarding, ice skating, or hiking. People that live and work here year-round tend to work in the service industry. For a small town, it has a great selection of restaurants and shopping.

There’s even rush hour… even though it coincides with the start and the end of the ski day.

T and I landed at the Friedman Memorial Airport in the late morning, which left us enough time to rush into Ketchum and ski a half day, courtesy of Alaska Airlines and the Sun Valley Resort.

[Pro Tip: If you fly Alaska Airlines into the Friedman Memorial Airport (SUN) from Seattle and show your boarding pass to the Sun Valley Resort, it will issue you a free half-day lift ticket for use on your arrival date! This has been going on for the past couple of years and I don’t know how long it’ll continue, but it’s a great deal.]

The skiing was great and I was so jazzed about it that I decided to take this awkward selfie.

Even though I didn’t run a single step this weekend, I stayed active with skiing and walking around town. Oh, and I was able to get in some pretty good arm workouts with all the champagne glasses I lifted to my mouth.

Sunday night was My Other Super Bowl, the Academy Awards. (My Other Super Bowl is not to be confused with My Super Bowl, the Golden Globes–which is like the funny, foul-mouthed, drunk cousin of the Academy Awards.) Our trip and the Oscars were perfectly timed because it meant I was able to watch the awards show and red carpet with my BFF for the first time in yeeeeears–usually we just furiously text comments back and forth. Plus, we were able to watch them with my darling mom, who always has cute commentary (partially because she’s funny, and partially because English is her second language).

And we were watching it in Sun Valley, where the movie stars go to play. A short list of some of the Oscar-nominated or -winning actors and directors I’ve seen in Sun Valley over the years includes: Clint Eastwood, Robin Williams, Julie Andrews, Bette Midler, James Caan, Michael Keaton, and Tom Hanks. We didn’t see any stars when we were in SV this weekend, probably because they’re all in LA right now.

And of course it was sunny for most of the weekend, because you know how Sun Valley received its name, right?

How was your weekend? Did you run, ski, or do some other activity to stay active? Do you ever go on “girls weekends?”

  1. I ran, of course. Skiing not my thing – tried downhill once (fell), XC once (fell) – get the theme? ;0 Tho I might be willing to try XC again – or perhaps snowshoeing.

I only hear of Ketchum from time to time – doesn’t Rebecca Rusch, the mountain bike and other endurance sport champion – live there?

I did a destination race with a friend a couple of times years ago. A girls’ weekend with a friend or two sounds wonderful….

    Great photos!

    • I’d never heard of Rebecca Rusch and just Googled her. Yes, she does live here in Ketchum! This place is perfect for elite athletes to train. The altitude in the valley is around 5,500-6,000 feet, so you can train at altitude. I definitely notice a difference when I run here!

Wow, that is so incredibly beautiful! I’ve been to Boise Idaho in the summer, but never been there in the winter. The mountains are awesome! What a fun getaway! I have gone on a few girls weekends but they are usually for races!

  3. I’ve only gone skiing once in my life (I was 7, so not sure if that counts, but I have gone snowboarding a couple times?), but all those pictures look so pretty! ❤

  4. Sounds like a great weekend! I’ve never been skiing as I’m not much of a winter sports person. Though we have fun going tubing with the kids 😉 as for girls weekends, some girlfriends and I are headed to phoenix to run the phoenix marathon this weekend. I’m so looking forward to the break. And yes, running a marathon out of town is a break for us!

    • Fun! I hope you have a great race and I can’t wait to read your race recap.

I also consider an out-of-town race a break. 🙂 My husband and kids would like to have one year without a family trip planned around one of my races.

  5. I would love to go to Sun Valley, it looks so beautiful there. Ever winter I say I want to go skiing again and I never get around to it… maybe next year. I love going on girls weekends! I’m going to Nashville with my gfs next month.

  6. Looks amazing! I don’t ski anymore but my husband is an avid skier. He is in Austria w/his dad skiing now! The weekend was fun here: going away party, last long run for Phoenix marathon next weekend and Cycle for Survival spin event in Chicago. That was awesome. And a mini-Oscars party with girlfriends. My college girlfriends and I have done Miami weekends for a few years now. And, lots of race girls weekends!

    • Wow! I would love to go skiing in Austria. I went to the Alps during the summer and found them to be the most beautiful place on earth. I can only imagine how gorgeous it would be to ski there!

Your weekend sounds like it was jam-packed with activity. I had a girls weekend in South Beach when I was in my 20s. It was extremely memorable!

  7. I took snowboarding lessons years ago in Colorado, but I’m not much of a winter sport person. I love that ski resorts keep busy year round with all the great terrain for hiking as well.

  8. How fun! I drove past Sun Valley once, but I haven’t stayed there yet. Skiing is an awesome workout! I live right by several ski resorts in Utah, and sadly I haven’t been skiing in years, crazy I know! Have a great rest of your vacation!!!!!

    • Thank you, Kristy! You have beautiful ski hills surrounding you. I went on a ski trip to SLC with my husband about 12 years ago and we had a great time. My mom and I are planning to go down there next winter!

  9. Molly, these pictures are amazing; I hope you and T are having a BLAST! Loved the Oscars last night; Julianne Moore’s dress was definitely one of my faves, and I just love that she won. I’m not sure how I feel about all of the Birdman love; I haven’t seen it yet, so I really have to reserve judgement. Thanks so much for linking up again this week and sharing your beautiful pics; have fun, stay safe and enjoy your girl time!

    • I love Julianne Moore; she can do no wrong, as far as I’m concerned! Her fellow nominees were legitimately happy for her, which says something.

I watched “Birdman” on Sunday night and it was too dark for me. And I like dark! I don’t know… I think I just like Richard Linklater and “Boyhood” too much to be objective.

I have not been on ski’s in years. I grew up in Lake Tahoe and started skiing at the age of 3. The most amazing sport ever! What an awesome trip you have had. So fun 🙂

  11. I am horribly uncoordinated so skiing and I don’t get along! I do love to go the ski resorts and hang out though. Sitting in the lodge with cocoa and a book while everyone else skis is awesome! The photos are gorgeous and it looks like you had a blast!

  12. Wow, what a gorgeous place! I don’t really do a lot of snow sports, I have never skied but I have snowboarded, which I like, but now that we have a little one, there isn’t much time for it. I’d love to just hang at the lodge near the fireplace with a good book and a cup of cocoa!

    • I agree that it’s tough to ski or snowboard with a little one at home. I didn’t ski for a couple of years when I was having my babies, and returning to skiing was a little slow because I was worried I would hurt myself (something I didn’t really think about pre-kids).

    • It’s a lot of fun, but it helps to have sunny weather and dry conditions. Skiing in the rain or in wet snow isn’t very fun. My husband didn’t like skiing when we met because he was used to skiing in the wet conditions we have in Washington. He didn’t begin to enjoy it until I took him to Sun Valley!

  13. Tricia Johnson says:

That’s awesome that you were able to watch the Oscars with your bestie! How fun! I hope you guys have an awesome trip! Enjoy!

  14. I’ve never been to Sun Valley, but it looks like somewhere I need to add to the list! I stayed active with running, snowboarding a little of the same arm workout as you..but with PBR of course 🙂 Your girls trip sounds like a blast, enjoy!

  15. Shayna says:

That looks like so much fun! Granted, I don’t ski because I was traumatized as a kid..my parents tried to teach me LOL! But I love girls’ weekends! I haven’t been on one in awhile, last one was a few years ago in Vegas! Those were some fun times!

    • You sound like how my husband felt about skiing when we first started dating. Where you ski and how you learn have a huge impact on whether or not you end up liking the sport.

A girls weekend in Vegas sounds like the be-all, end-all. Fun!

    • I took time off from skiing when my kids were small. We ended up getting back into it because I wanted my kids to grow up as skiers. We’re trying as hard as we can to be a skiing family, but my kids’ other activities sometimes make that difficult. It’s hard to juggle!

  16. I have tried skiing twice – the first time was an abject failure, the second time was a few years ago and I stuck to the bunny slope the whole time! Snowshoeing once in awhile – I’m OK with that!

This weekend involved Pilates, a 16km run, yoga, and the Academy Awards! I also got caught up on the #GrowYourBlog hop and related social media! 🙂

Great photos – glad you had a good weekend!!

    • I have never tried snowshoeing but have several friends who do, and they love it. I should go with one of them sometime!

It sounds like you had a fun and busy weekend. Thanks for reading and commenting on my blog.

  17. That looks like a very fun weekend! Sounds like you were able to stay very active even if not running 🙂

I love girls weekends! It’s so much fun to get everyone together for a little getaway – I think the best memories are made during these types of trips!

  18. Your pictures are amazing. I love taking long weekends throughout the year instead of longer vacations once or twice a year. I feel like it keeps me fresh at work to get out of the office and away from it all every other month or so. Can’t wait for my nex girls weekend at Ragnar SoCal!
