It’s Monday morning and it doesn’t feel like a Monday for the second week in a row. Hooray! I’m off work today and blogging from Ketchum, Idaho, home of the legendary Sun Valley Resort, where I’ve been staying this weekend.
Before I skipped out of town for my mini-vacay, on Friday night my husband and I drove up to Seattle for a concert at the Moore Theater. This was the second time in a few months that I saw Brandi Carlile in concert, and she was fantastic (again!).
Saturday morning I woke up bright and early to await my ride to the airport: My best friend T, who flew up from her home in San Francisco to travel with me to Idaho for our girls weekend!
Ketchum, while a very small town, is unlike most small towns in that it’s a ski town. Everyone’s extremely active, whether it’s skiing (alpine or cross country), snowboarding, ice skating, or hiking. People that live and work here year-round tend to work in the service industry. For a small town, it has a great selection of restaurants and shopping.
There’s even rush hour… even though it coincides with the start and the end of the ski day.
T and I landed at the Friedman Memorial Airport in the late morning, which left us enough time to rush into Ketchum and ski a half day, courtesy of Alaska Airlines and the Sun Valley Resort.
[Pro Tip: If you fly Alaska Airlines into the Friedman Memorial Airport (SUN) from Seattle and show your boarding pass to the Sun Valley Resort, it will issue you a free half-day lift ticket for use on your arrival date! This has been going on for the past couple of years and I don’t know how long it’ll continue, but it’s a great deal.]
The skiing was great and I was so jazzed about it that I decided to take this awkward selfie.
Even though I didn’t run a single step this weekend, I stayed active with skiing and walking around town. Oh, and I was able to get in some pretty good arm workouts with all the champagne glasses I lifted to my mouth.
Sunday night was My Other Super Bowl, the Academy Awards. (My Other Super Bowl is not to be confused with My Super Bowl, the Golden Globes–which is like the funny, foul-mouthed, drunk cousin of the Academy Awards.) Our trip and the Oscars were perfectly timed because it meant I was able to watch the awards show and red carpet with my BFF for the first time in yeeeeears–usually we just furiously text comments back and forth. Plus, we were able to watch them with my darling mom, who always has cute commentary (partially because she’s funny, and partially because English is her second language).
And we were watching it in Sun Valley, where the movie stars go to play. A short list of some of the Oscar-nominated or -winning actors and directors I’ve seen in Sun Valley over the years includes: Clint Eastwood, Robin Williams, Julie Andrews, Bette Midler, James Caan, Michael Keaton, and Tom Hanks. We didn’t see any stars when we were in SV this weekend, probably because they’re all in LA right now.
And of course it was sunny for most of the weekend, because you know how Sun Valley received its name, right?
How was your weekend? Did you run, ski, or do some other activity to stay active? Do you ever go on “girls weekends?”
