5 Things I’m Loving Right Now

I’m celebrating the fact that this is my second consecutive week of linking up with the DC Trifecta (Courtney at Eat, Pray, Run DCMar at Mar on the Run, and Cynthia at You Signed up for What?!) for their legendary Friday 5 Link-Up.

The Trifecta’s chosen theme for this week is “5 brands to love,” I’m putting a little spin on it to feature 5 Things I’m Loving Right Now:

1. Hoka Stinson Lites

me and my hokas - alsoranagainSince I restarted running in early March, I’ve been wearing Hokas to run outside. I think they’re causing me to run more with a mid-foot strike (as opposed to my default heel-strike) and prevent me from over-striding.  Although the sole is thick and squishy, the shoes are very light and feel relatively responsive considering their soles are at least twice the thickness of my beloved Mizunos. I wore my Hokas when I raced recently, and they performed pretty well. Although my feet didn’t turn over that quickly at the race, I think that’s due to my fitness level and not the shoe.

2.  Warby Parker’s Finch

warby parker finch - alsoranagainThree years ago, I made the life-changing decision to stop buying expensive eyeglass frames and lenses from traditional optical shops and to instead buy my glasses from Warby Parker. I wear traditional lenses (no bifocals, in other words), so my glasses at Warby Parker cost only $99. And that includes anti-glare lenses! Prior to Warby Parker, I would spend anywhere between $350-750 for a pair of glasses. Ouch.

I love that for every pair I buy, Warby Parker donates a pair of eyeglasses to someone in need. I also love that Warby Parker’s reasonable price-point allows me to get new frames every year in order to suit my fashion whims. This year, though, I ended up buying another pair of Finch frames (in a different color, however) because I think the shape of these frames suits my face well. I get a lot of compliments on my glasses and never fail to tell the compliment-giver where I bought my specs!

3.  J.Crew Reese Pants

All hail comfortable work pants! I’ve written about these pants before, but I can’t just help myself from discussing them further. I love them because they’re comfortable (thank you, elastic waistband), stylish, and machine-washable. I can’t be the only one who’s sick of paying half my paycheck to the dry cleaner…

4.  Cherry Limeade Nuun

IMG_9401I have been drinking scads of Cherry Limeade Nuun lately in my efforts to stay more hydrated. I was getting pretty lax a while back with hydration, and would frequently note at the end of the day that I felt parched. Sometimes I would even have headaches.

The common advice is that one should drink 64 ounces of water per day, but apparently I was failing. I do love straight-up water (especially when it’s ice cold), but that would get a little boring after a while. Nuun the to rescue! And even better, Nuun that’s caffeinated, like my favorite Cherry Limeade.

Added bonus: I’m not spending as much money at Starbucks. Cherry Limeade is one major reason I’ve been able to stay away from my old morning standby drink, the non-fat no-whip 2-pump mocha, which I used to have at least 4 times per week.

5.  Oiselle High 10 Bra

I picked up one of these babies in black at the Oiselle sample sale. I was on the fence about buying more than one because I didn’t want to try it on there, and therefore didn’t know how it would fit. So of course it fits like a dream, doesn’t cause uni-boob, and keeps things from bouncing around. I wish I could get another one, but it’s been discontinued. Fortunately, this one looks like it might be a good alternative.

What are you loving lately? What is your favorite sports bra? Running shoe? Pair of comfy work pants?

    • I’m glad you’re planning to try it. I think it tastes great and like that it’s low calorie. When I started out running I drank Gatorade, but it was so sugary that it hurt my stomach. Not an issue with Nuun. 🙂

  1. Ahhhh those glasses are fabulous!! I will definitely check out my that company. I normally wear contacts so I hate paying a bazillion dollars for glasses. And I hate paying the dry cleaners all my money! I’m really intrigued by those JCrew pants so I may try them! Lots of fun new things to learn about today. 🙂 Have a great weekend!

    • Thank you! If you hate paying a lot of money for glasses, then you should definitely give Warby Parker a try. They have a lot of cute designs (including Rx sunglasses), and will ship you up to 5 pairs to try at home. It’s fun.

  2. I need to check out those J Crew pants! Thanks for sharing. I just bout a pair of altras with higher cushion and love them. I’ve been interested in looking at Hokas, too. Have heard good things.

    • Me too. For some reason, I have this weird issue with paying more than $20 for a sports bra. I think that comes from buying bras at Target for so many years. I do still wear their C9 brand of bras, though. 🙂

  3. i’m trying out a pair of hokas tonight at the 5k i’m running – they do shoe try ons where you can test a shoe for the race. i’m excited to try hokas – i’ll let you know what i think 🙂 have a great weekend!

      • oh yeah – i did it last week too with the new adidas ultra boosts (although i run in the older version now). i’m not “racing” tonight though – we’re running a marathon relay in the AM so just taking it nice and slow to try the shoes 🙂

Those hokas are really cute! Yes, I know that’s not the point but still… 🙂 Thanks for the eyeglasses store tip! I usually wear contacts, my glasses are just for when I’m sick or tired (or want to look especially smart at work, lol) but I do like to replace them every few years and that’s coming up. $99 is way better than the $300 mine usually cost! And the charity aspect is an added bonus!

  5. Love this post! I guess I’m going to have to look up these J. Crew pants; I’ve heard you mention them before, so they must be pretty great. I have some knit pants from J. Jill that have an elastic waist (think Go Joggings) and they look really nice with a longer top and they’re so comfortable! It seems like lots of folks are getting on the Hoka bandwagon these days; I’ve never tried on a pair! Maybe I should branch out…it’s so scary, though! 😉 I loved the Oiselle Lesko bra (also no longer available), but I’m really loving the Verrazano now! Okay, I hope you have an awesome weekend!!

    • Yes, my obsession with the J.Crew pants continues. I might need an intervention. I read on another blog today about J.Jill’s comfortable work wear, too, and am going to check it out!

If you like the Lesko (which sounds like it was really similar, support-wise, to the High 10) and you like the Verrazano now, I think I will need to try the Verrazano. Thanks for the tip!

  6. Is it weird that I love 4 out of the 5 things on your list too? (I have never tried Hokas.)

Every time I wear my Reece pants, I want to give you a giant hug for making me aware of such wonderful, comfortable pants!

I was at the eye doctor a few months ago and people were buying outrageously expensive glasses and I just wanted to shout, “Don’t you know about Warby Parker?!?!”

    Happy Friday!

  7. Wow, I’ve never heard of Warby Parker! I need to check them out. I wonder if I can use my HSA card? And yes, those glasses do look amazing on you! I can not imagine what kind of damage I would do at a Oiselle sample sale. It would be like heaven though. And I love my cherry limeade Nuun too!

    • Warby Parker accepts HSA and FSA cards, as far as I can tell. It’s a legit optical shop, just online. They do have some storefronts, too. I know they’re in NY and Philly.

  8. John @ run. geek. run(disney) says:

Great list. I’ll have to look at those glasses. I’m due to get a check up and new pair.

Love Nuun. You even picked my favorite flavor, Cherry Limeade.

  9. Why is it that when you find something you really love, they either discontinue it or change it. It drives me nuts. I’ve always stayed away from Nuun assuming it has artificial sweetener, which I can’t do. I should research that. Have a great weekend!

    • Murphy’s Law! Take a look at Nuun–I think it’s sweetened with sorbitol. I am normally sensitive to sorbitol (I once ate some sugar-free gummi bears made with sorbitol and had to leave work because I was so sick), but Nuun doesn’t upset my stomach. Not sure if that helps.

  10. I went to a Warby Parker store in Chelsea last year, but it was so crowded. I will need to look online the next time I look for glasses. I heart J.Crew as well…wearing a new dress for a wedding tonight. Hope you have a good weekend!

    • I like how Warby Parker and some other online glasses retailers will send you multiple frames to try at home. It’s so much better to live with the frames for a couple of days before committing.

  11. I will have to check out that sports bra, I am always on the look out for a good one, who knew it was so complicated?! I guess right now I am loving my chariot double stroller because it let’s me get out and be active even with the two little ones 🙂

    • Sports bra shopping is uber complicated! I agree with you about a good stroller making all the difference. I spent a ton of time researching strollers before I bought one. And I still ended up buying one after that because the first one wasn’t perfect!
