Weekend Update: Birthdays, Shopping, & a Lilly Pulitzer for Target Giveaway

Happy Monday! IMG_5781How was your weekend? Mine went by in a blur, but it was fun. In keeping with the somewhat frenetic pace of this past weekend, today’s contribution to the Weekend Update Link-Up, hosted by Tara, will be long on photos and short on words. Enjoy! (Oh–and please visit Tara over at Running ‘n’ Reading and, if you have a blog, consider linking up.) IMG_9414 Saturday started with a walk and yoga with Aimee. Such a beautiful morning in the Pacific Northwest! Saturday also marked the 11th anniversary of the day I became a mother: my daughter’s birthday. I can’t believe how quickly time slipped by between this: IMG_9428 And this: IMG_9437We had pedicures on her big day. I will spare you the photo of my runner-feet.

We also tried out the new Chik-fil-A, which is only the second Chik-fil-A in the state of Washington. It opened last Thursday and it was crazy busy. I liked their nuggets when I lived back east, and eating there this weekend was like meeting up with an old friend. IMG_9420 If small chunks of fried chicken can be considered “friends.”

I also received my first Plated delivery this weekend. My friend A told me about it when I was marveling over how she has time to make such inventive meals while also working as a full-time attorney and having two young kids. Her secret? Plated, which delivers all the makings of dishes–fresh food, measured portions, and recipes–to your home. IMG_9425 I ordered two different recipes to start out: Sesame Soy Tilapia Udon and Chicken Souvlaki with Rice. I will let you know how they turn out in a later post. In the meantime, if you’re interested in trying Plated, you can get two free plates in your first order if you use this link. (Full disclosure: That’s an affiliate link.)

I also went to a great shop-local event in Tacoma organized by Libertine Tacoma Gourmet Culinary Salts & Sugars. IMG_9430 I am obsessed with their Yum X 3 seasoning salt after buying it at the holiday Tacoma Is for Lovers shopping party and recently ran out, so I needed to stock up. IMG_9431 Of course I ended up buying other wonderful seasoning salts, too, including one that Libertine said would make my kids eat more vegetables!

Saturday night, I stayed up very, very late to be one of the early birds at the Lilly Pulitzer for Target online sale. I was not alone.IMG_9698 Interest was so high that the Target site crashed even before the sale was supposed to officially start at 12:00 a.m. PST. People had somehow sneaked onto the site before it opened and were able to make some purchases before Target shut it down. It reopened for a brief period around midnight my time and I managed to buy some of the things I wanted before the site crashed again.

There were a lot of tired, unhappy, preppy women venting on Twitter that night, including me. I wasn’t able to purchase everything I wanted and, as silly and shallow as it sounds, I was pretty stressed. The demand was huge, and people were selling the things they somehow already bought on Ebay for 3-6 times the retail price. I knew I wouldn’t be able to get to my local Target store when it opened the following morning. Aimee and I had plans to run.

Come Sunday morning, however, I decided to run fewer miles than originally planned: 3 versus 7. Okay, so a lot fewer. But this was Lilly Pulitzer for a fraction of the price! I didn’t want to miss out.

I arrived at Target about 15 minutes after it opened and the clothing and home sections were already almost empty. Good thing I was able to get the clothes I wanted online! There were still a lot of beauty items available, which I wanted, as well as towels. I picked up some items for friends and also bought a few gifts, which was fun. A couple of very nice women also gave me some straw totes that they managed to snag upon the store’s opening but which they no longer wanted. Score! One for me, one for Aimee. IMG_9458 IMG_9473 All in all, it was a good haul… and I am now going on a shopping hiatus for the next few months. Keep me accountable, blog-audience!

Finally, we ended the weekend with my son’s 9th birthday (so old!). We not only had a party with his friends, but a family party. IMG_9568 IMG_9668Are you surprised that I was exhausted by the end of the day on Sunday? What a weekend!

To celebrate the end of what has to be one of the busiest weekends I’ve had in a while, I am giving away this adorable Lilly Pulitzer for Target headband.IMG_9701 To enter, please leave a comment below about the best thing you did this past weekend.

    • Plated is expensive for “home cooked” meals. I thought I would try it out because they were running a promotion, and because I have been spending so much eating out lately due to time constraints (and Plated is still less expensive than dining out).

Good for you for taking a break on the mileage. It’s so important to do that to avoid overuse injuries.

      Thanks for entering the giveaway!

The best thing I did this weekend is spend “girl time” with my mom and sisters. We went for a Sunday afternoon drive and got ice cream. The simple times spent together are the best 🙂

  2. Your Lilly goods are gorgeous!!!! I had to work this weekend, but lucky for me target is conveniently placed between my house and work 🙂 On my drive home Saturday evening I did a little recon to see where they would set up the Lilly Collection . Once I arrived home I set up the computer and prepared for the online launch ! I was able to score two things luckily & made it to bed by 9:30 Hawaii Time . The next morning I woke around 6am and prepared myself to head down and stand in line for the opening at 8am. It was mostly a success , the ladies on Maui were all nice , no cattyness. My target didn’t have dishes , headbands, turbans, makeup bags , and no shift dresses . I scored a few peices in store and headed to work with a little shopping buzz 🙂 it was a great weekend all together! Love this piece on the giveaway!!!!!!!

  3. Wait, your son and your daughter have birthdays within days of each other? That is awesome! (And exhausting!)

Love the Lily stuff for Target. I wonder if they will make more of it because of the high demand?!

The best part of my weekend was a great 22 miler in the sun to cap off a great training cycle!

    • Yes–crazy, right? If I hadn’t been induced with my son, they might have had the same birthday!

Target says it won’t make any more. Bummer!

Nice job on your last serious long run, Marilyn! I can’t believe Eugene is less than 3 weeks away…

  4. I can’t believe you actually scored some merch out of that madness; there was just one dress that I really wanted and it wasn’t sold online…so, I was out of luck! I’m glad you were able to find some things you wanted! Sounds like a fun (and yes, exhausting!) weekend, and Happy Birthday to your kiddos! So cute! I can’t wait to hear about your experience with Plated; my MIL has been using Hello Fresh and she gave me one of her meals, but we weren’t that impressed. Thanks so much for linking up with the blog today!!

    • The Lilly scene was much mellower up here in my little corner of the US. It’s not a very popular brand among us webbed-footers. 🙂

Thank you for the well-wishes and for hosting the link-up, Tara. Have a great week!

  5. Chik-Fil-A was born around here. Best chicken sandwich EVER. My sad runner feet are desperate for a pedicure! You had a busy weekend. Happy Birthday to the kids.

  6. Wow, how did I miss all the Lilly Pulitzer craziness? I’m kind of wishing I had gone to the store Sunday morning, but it’s probably best I didn’t. I missed out on some cuteness though!

Sounds like you had a great weekend! I spent nine with my little man – we saw my sister race on Saturday and did a lot of playing 🙂

  7. The best thing I did last weekend was treat myself (and my boyfriend) to a killer homemade brunch, including bacon pancakes with bourbon maple syrup. YUM!

I didn’t venture out into the craziness that was Target to get Lily, but I hear it was INSANE. Thanks for the giveaway! 🙂

  8. Wow, you had a busy weekend! Happy Birthdays to your kiddos! I will admit to loving the Lily style, but have never owned any of her clothing – I have scored some techy accessories on sale though! And I had NO IDEA that she was releasing a line at Target…man, I must be living under a rock! This is what non-stop training will get me I guess 🙂 Best thing I did this weekend was complete a half marathon I felt unprepared for….and overall was pleased with the result. Not my best race time-wise by any means, but I still felt good at the end and we had a great time! Oh, and watching all the Boston coverage today!

  9. Happy Birthday to both your kiddos! Glad you were able to get some of the LP for T Sunday morning. I watched it all unfold on Twitter and FB when I woke up. What was the large item in the pink and green bag -hammock? The yoga studio looks adorable.

    • #LillyforTarget was trending in the wee hours of Sunday morning, which is not surprising how many amped-up preppy ladies were on their tweeting ire. The big bag in the cart is a beach umbrella that’s pink, a green-and-white leaf pattern, and edged with white pom-poms. It’s adorable, but my husband put his foot down on the kitsch. I’m taking it back. 😦

I must have been living under a rock because I had no idea about the Lily Pulitzer crazy until everyone started posting about it!! My neighbor does Plated and loves it. She’s cooked a few meals for me and they have been wonderful!!

  12. the best thing i did this weekend was probably to see fast & furious 7 & eat korean food. awesome lilly for target finds! i was refreshing their website into the wee hours of the night but eventually i gave up, lol.

The best thing I did all weekend was help take care of my mom. She’s been under the weather lately, and it was a quiet weekend at home. Thanks for the chance to win some Lilly P! Wasn’t able to get to the store (out of town) and no luck online.

    • How nice of you to take care of your mom! That’s a much better way to spend a weekend than going to Target and fighting over some beach towels or straw totes. Good luck on the giveaway!

      • bnewsam says:

Mom’s feeling better, so that’s good news! 🙂 I can only imagine what the real Lilly would’ve thought of people fighting over her line at Target. She was such a classy lady!

The best thing I did this past weekend was spend time with my family and fiancé who all live in different places. I posted this giveaway on Pinterest.

  15. Tricia Johnson says:

How did you like Plated? I recently tried Blue Apron and didn’t really enjoy it. Looks like you scored big time at Target over the weekend! I hope they still have the makeup bags in the stores!

  16. Wow, I cannot believe the Lily Pulitzer stuff at Target sold out so fast! Dedicated fans 🙂

The most fun thing I did last weekend was having dinner with a pregnant friend. We had the best low-key evening and made pizza. A perfect Saturday 🙂

  17. The best thing I did this past weekend was go to the drive-in movies with my hubby & son. We saw Paul Blart II while our son was awake and then the new Will Ferrell movie after he fell asleep 🙂

I went to two different Target stores to try to buy some Lilly Pulitzer, but no luck!
